Facts About The VagisilTM Screening Kit for Vaginal Infections

What it is

In-home testing kit to help women make a more accurate assessment about possible vaginal infections. The screening kit helps a woman determine if her symptoms may be caused by a yeast infection or another type of vaginal infection that could require different treatment by a healthcare professional.

Why do you need it

The kit helps women take charge of their feminine health. Until now, no at-home testing kit has been available to rapidly, easily and accurately screen for vaginal infections.

When do you need it

For women who are experiencing vaginal discharge, unpleasant odor, itching, or burning.

How it works

Developed by a gynecologist, the kit measures vaginal pH, one criteria used by healthcare professionals in determining if a woman has a vaginal infection.

The kit contains two individually wrapped vaginal wands with pH paper at one end. A woman inserts one of the wands into her vagina, presses the pH paper against the vaginal wall and removes the wand. The pH paper will change color according to the woman’s condition. Then she matches the resulting pH paper color to an accompanying pH color guide. The number that corresponds with the color match is her vaginal pH.

What the pH means

If a woman’s pH reading is 4.5, her symptoms may be due to a yeast infection. A yeast infection usually doesn’t cause an increase in pH, so the pH will read 4.5, a normal level.

If her pH is 5.0 or higher, her symptoms may be due to bacterial vaginosis (BV). BV is the most common vaginal infection in women in the United States, according to The National Institutes of Health. With BV, the normal vaginal bacteria balance shifts and “bad” bacteria in the vagina overgrow. Symptoms may include: abnormal vaginal discharge, vaginal odor (often fishy), itching and burning.

A pH reading of 5.0 or higher might also indicate a sexually transmitted disease (STD) called trichomoniasis. Symptoms of trichomoniasis may include unpleasant smelling vaginal discharge, itching and burning.

If a woman’s pH reading is 5.0 or greater, or if her pH reading is 4.5 and she has never had a yeast infection but is symptomatic, it is strongly recommended she visit her health care practitioner for a full diagnosis and treatment.
